GRID TELECOM JOINS AS A MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL SUBOPTIC UNION AND THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION FOR THE PROTECTION OF SUBMARINE CABLES
Athens, April 15th 2026, Grid Telecom, a subsidiary of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), announces its joining as a Member of the International SubOptic Association and as a Member of the International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC). SubOptic is the leading international association representing the submarine telecommunications systems industry, while the ICPC is the global collective association of the industry dedicated to the protection, resilience and sustainability of submarine cable infrastructures for energy and telecommunications.
Participation in SubOptic strengthens Grid Telecom's strategic position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, at a time when the need for resilient, high-capacity international infrastructures is rapidly increasing. As a member of the association, Grid Telecom will participate in working groups, technical and regulatory initiatives, as well as in actions that promote innovation, sustainability, and best practices in the submarine systems sector.
As a member of ICPC, Grid Telecom will actively participate in the collective association that brings together the owners of submarine cables and international infrastructure, commercial operators, regulatory authorities, and specialized suppliers from around the world, with the aim of promoting best practices in the design, installation, operation, maintenance, and protection of submarine energy and telecommunications cables.
The ICPC operates as a platform for the exchange of operational know-how, the formulation of guidelines and the addressing of risks affecting submarine cables internationally, playing a key role in safeguarding the critical infrastructures that support global telecommunications, energy transmission, and economic activity. Grid Telecom’s inclusion as a wholesale telecommunications provider, with significant activity in regional fiber optic cable systems, reflects its commitment to contributing its expertise and practical experience to this joint effort.
The mission of Grid Telecom includes the design, development, and management of submarine fiber optic cables and related infrastructures. Through its active participation in SubOptic and ICPC, it aims at the mutual transfer of expertise, contributing to the development and implementation of best practices for risk management and enhancing the resilience of international infrastructures, as well as promoting collaborative actions for the security of submarine systems, seeking the long-term improvement of their performance.
Joining SubOptic represents yet another step in Grid Telecom's mission to enhance Greece's international connectivity and support the growing demand for reliable, high-capacity interconnection in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region. About IPTO:
The Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) is responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and development of the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System, aiming to ensure safe and undisrupted power supply across the country. IPTO’s Ten-Year Network Development Plan provides for the electrical interconnection of major Greek islands in the High Voltage System, the strengthening and modernization of the continental power grid as well as the facilitation of Greece’s transition towards a cleaner energy mix.
